The events of the past few years and the political polarization that divides the nation has made what has always been the difficult, delicate job of educators and support staff infinitely more challenging. From the civil unrest of this summer to impeachment, teachers have had to tear up their lesson plans and start from scratch, with few resources to support them, and all under the shadow of potential blowback from parents and their communities for discussing “divisive” issues.
This has been overwhelming, tiring work in which there are no clear answers. Our responsibility is both to inform but also to admit when we do not have the answers. We need to process this as educators, as Americans, as a citizen, as a voter, in the same way a student would.
The eyes of America’s students—the rising generation who will inherit the republic we leave them—they watched what unfolded in Washington DC last week. We must set an example for our students and families.
The article, A Teachable Moment: Deep and Rich Education Is Vital to Bringing Out Our Better Angels sums up how we need to come together as a country. “This is a time for cooperation and finding common ground on education as much as in political affairs. An education that is both deep and rich brings with it the understanding that diversity of thought and love of country can co-exist peacefully, and that our darkest days can yield to our better angels. That’s where we must begin anew.”
(Allen, Jeanne. “A Teachable Moment: Deep and Rich Education Is Vital to Bringing Out Our Better Angels.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 12 Jan. 2021, www.forbes.com/sites/jeanneallen/2021/01/12/a-teachable-moment-deep-and-rich-education-is-vital-to-bringing-out-our-better-angels/?sh=5ca18407512a).
As we come to grips with last week’s events, we also had changes in our safety protocol for all schools in Ohio. Governor DeWine announced that the state is changing its guidance for K-12 schools related to quarantining students exposed to COVID-19. Under the new guidance, students exposed to another student who tests positive for COVID-19 will no longer need to quarantine as long as the exposure took place in classroom settings and the students were wearing masks. This change would be directed at students in the lab on a consistent basis. For example, students who attend daily, group or individual therapy, and meetings and or conferences. Please continue to monitor and support our healthy restart plan by having students wear a mask and wash their hands multiple times per day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Jeff Grimmett. Thank you for all that you have done and I am looking forward to seeing all of you again.
